Who is TeamSmart?
TeamSmart is a professional training and team building provider incorporating Experienced-Based Training and Development (EBTD) through challenge initiatives and experiential education. These initiatives (activities) provide participants with an interactive, hands-on approach in their training. Programs have application for personal and organizational growth, skill development, and team building for businesses, office staffs, individuals, families, church and youth groups, school and athletic teams, and "Teams" from every walk of life.
What is EBTD?
Experienced-Based Training and Development is a mixture of challenging, adventurous activities that bring about positive changes in individuals, groups, or organizations. The activities are followed by opportunities for group reflection, a debrief, if you would. EBTD activities are very effective because besides being novel, they involve all the senses, making the activities holistic. The approach is based on the philosophy of experiential education, which is learning by doing with reflection. The Association of Experiential Education (AEE) described experiential education as "a philosophy and methodology in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values." The 20th century American philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey stated that, "Experiential learning (education) takes place when a person involved in an activity looks back and evaluates it, determines what was useful or important to remember, and uses this information to perform another activity."
Providing metaphors is the easiest and best way to teach adult learners. Using metaphors connects new skills and concepts to already known skills or concepts- providing a likeness or analogy between them. These metaphors enhance the transfer of learning. Experiential learning activities are created as metaphors for work and life situations. After each activity, during the debrief, participants are encouraged to make parallels, drawing metaphoric connections directly to their real life responsibilities and relationships, and then transfer the concepts back to life and work applications. It also helps participants discover the optimal learning points and creates a new awareness of the groups’ talents and skills.
In short, EBTD and experiential learning activities consists of four parts: Challenge, Experience, Reflection, and Transfer-Application.
Does EBTD Work?
The simple answer, YES! Learning by experience is the oldest, most fundamental and greatest result oriented learning type. Experienced-Based Training and Development is grounded on the principle that learning is more effective when the whole person is actively involved. Experiential learning is active learning, rather than passive. This allows people to practice the very skills they are learning and are more likely to remember them upon returning to their duties. EBTD programs offer concrete experiences that are task oriented, just like work/life. These experiences bring about learning outcomes beyond those of the typical lecture-based training and development.
Many studies have been done showing the efficiency of experiential learning. It is proven that a person remembers 20% of what they hear, 50% of what they see, and 80% of what they do. In Studies done by Simon Priest, PhD, it was found that corporate adventure (experiential) training can be an effective means of developing teams. The experiential approach was also found to be far more effective than the classroom approach in developing teamwork; as much as 25% more increase measures of teamwork with experiential programming as compared to classroom lectures. A survey of participants who have gone through an EBTD program revealed that 96% felt the program was valuable in team building, 86% saw new insights into leadership, and 92% of the participants gained increased closeness to teammates.
Dr. Priest gives six reasons why EBTD programming is set apart from the traditional forms of training and development, and is therefore more effective. He states that EBTD is: 1) experiential 2) dramatic 3) novel 4) consequential 5) metaphoric 6) transferable.
In their book, Processing the Experience, (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, 1997) Luckner and Nadler also give reasons as to why experiential learning is effective. They are:
So, Why TeamSmart for your training and teambuilding needs?
Who doesn't want to have fun? There is nothing wrong with play. This is true even during a training and development session. An article found in Psychology Today states that:
"Most of us think of adult play as respite or indulgence, but having fun is no trivial pursuit. In fact, it's crucial to our mental creativity, health and happiness. . . Yet. . . play's value among adults is too often vastly underrated. We would all agree that play lifts stress from us. It refreshes us and recharges us. It restores our optimism. It changes our perspective, stimulating creativity. It renews our ability to accomplish the work of the world. By anyone's reckoning, those are remarkably worthy achievements."
